Joseph
Shulka was cofounder and Past President of the
Center for Homicide Research and had been active in
the struggle against anti-gay violence and homicide for many years. Following a personal attack in
1990, Shulka became an outspoken, public advocate in conjunction with the Gay and Lesbian
Community Action Council (now OutFront Minnesota)
and appeared at numerous public forums on their behalf. He has also been interested in
rural gay issues and has been featured in the award-winning anthology, "Farm Boys
Lives of Gay Men from the Rural Midwest."
Shulka has worked in nonprofit management for nearly 20 years. His experience in nonprofit management includes fundraising, marketing,
communications and program development with The Illusion Theater, the Learning
Disabilities Association, Minnesota Medical Association, Animal Humane Society, PFund Foundation and
others.
He also had many years of experience as a
volunteer coordinator of numerous successful special events and
fund-raisers for numerous nonprofit organizations.
Joe passed away suddenly on September 22, 2008. His work
and service made this work possible and will be sorely missed.
